چکیده

P. S. Hrnjak, S. P. Vanka A combined experimental and computational study will be undertaken to develop better understanding and control of dispersed two-phase flow in headers. First, we will examine misty flow regimes in headers using the refrigeration setup from Project 96 for which the liquid and vapor phase flow rates can be individually measured from five tubes distributed along the length of a header. A model of two-phase flow in headers will be developed which will be directly compared to experiments. Second, a more fundamental understanding of dispersed two-phase flow over a backward step, which simulates the sudden expansion at the inlet of a typical header, will be conducted using LDV/PDPA. The particle size, particle volume fraction and Reynolds number will all be varied over ranges applicable to headers and their effects noted. A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) code will be developed which will predict dispersed two-phase flow and corresponding comparisons with the experiments will be made.

Roughness and wettability of surfaces in boundary lubricated scuffing wear

The diversity of multidisciplinary approaches suggests that fundamentals of scuffing require systemic, complex multi-scale and multi-physics analysis of an irreversible process as it is postulated in present study. That is probably one of the reasons of lack of unequivocal model of this irreversible transitional process from stable more or less lubricated wear to scuffing described only by one ...

An Investigation into the Pull-out Failure Mechanisms of Suction Caissons

This paper reports results from an investigation into the suction caissons failure mechanisms under vertical pull-out loads. An insight to the failure mechanisms of suction caissons paves the path for developing analytical solutions to their pull-out capacity. The numerical models of suction caissons have first been calibrated by and verified against several experimental data from other researc...

An Investigation of the Fatigue Induced Failure Modes of Fiber/Elastomer ComDosites as Bearing Surfaces in Total HiD Joint Prosthesis

It is proposed to use elastomeric composites as artificial joint bearing surfaces to increase their fluid film lubrication and therefore reduce the number of failures which have been attributed to wear mechanisms. The fluid generated between the surfaces supports part of the load and prevents direct contact of the bearing surfaces. In order to obtain optimum elastohydrodynamic lubrication, elas...

Experimental study of the effects of repetitive surge condition on turbocharger performance

When the mass flow rate through the compressor is reduced at a constant pressure ratio, mass flow rate will drop to an extent that the complete reversal of flow and surge occurs. Recently many research focuses on turbocharger surge, however, there are not enough investigation on the effect of surge on the performance of the turbocharger. The aim of the paper is to investigate the effect of repe...

Investigation of Wear Behavior of Biopolymers for Total Knee Replacements Through Invitro Experimentation

The average life span of knee prosthesis used in Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is approximately 10 to 15 years. Literature indicates that the reasons for implant failures include wear, infection, instability, and stiffness. However, the majority of failures are due to wear and tear of the prosthesis. The most common biopolymer used in TKR  is Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). Pr...
